HACKENSACK, NJ – Several dozen people came to Gilda’s Club Northern New Jersey earlier this month to hear a lecture, “Lymphoma and Its Current Trends in Treatment,” by Andre Goy, M.D. Dr. Goy is deputy director of the Division of Lymphoma at the John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center, and the center’s director of cancer research. He is an internationally renowned leader in the treatment of lymphoma.
The November 11 event was held in memory of Irwin Weinberg, the late husband of New Jersey State Senator Loretta Weinberg (D-Teaneck). Senator Weinberg was in attendance, and delivered a short speech about the importance of educating yourself about new treatment options.
Weinberg said following the lecture, “It was wonderful hearing from Dr. Goy on the advances being made in the treatment of lymphoma, the illness which took my husband, Irwin Weinberg. His knowledge, optimism and presentation were great. I was so happy to see the Memorial Lecture take place, and to know that Gilda’s Club is now also a place for men (as well as women) to come, to learn, to socialize and to have fun.”
“My visit also enabled me to see the wonderful upgrades at Gilda’s Club,” Weinberg added of the clubhouse, which was recently renovated to be a completely “green” environment as a nod to those with suppressed immune systems from cancer treatments. “I look forward to seeing future growth for this great organization.”
After the lecture, Dr. Goy held a question-and-answer session. The event also included dinner for attendees.
The lecture is the first in a series Gilda’s Club plans focusing on treatment of blood cancers. Check our monthly calendar for upcoming lectures and social events, all of which are open to the public.
