HACKENSACK, NJ – Deirdre Imus, best selling author, philanthropist and children’s health advocate, has been named to the board of directors at Gilda’s Club Northern New Jersey (Gilda’s Club NNJ).
The appointment represents the next step in Ms. Imus’ sincere commitment to the elimination of environmental toxins that can threaten the health of northern New Jersey residents, including those with compromised immune systems. Ms. Imus, the founder and president of The Deirdre Imus Environmental Center for Pediatric Oncology at Hackensack University Medical Center, volunteered her time and effort to serve as a consultant on the renovation of Gilda’s Club’s Hackensack clubhouse as an entirely “green” environment .
The nonprofit offers social and emotional support services, free of charge, to all men, women, teenagers and children who are touched by cancer. Ms. Imus was the guest of honor at a rededication September 24 of the clubhouse, which was redone with completely environmentally friendly materials and furniture from about 20 vendors in the region – many of whom also donated their time (or discounted materials and labor).
Ms. Imus said she is thrilled by the appointment and plans to pursue a series of speaking engagements with the goal of counseling members and their families on a range of health and wellness-related topics.
“I’m so very honored to have this opportunity to connect with the members of Gilda’s Club – to help them change their lifestyles, and to help them support their health,” said Ms. Imus. “Gilda’s Club is a wonderful organization, like no other in northern New Jersey in its ability to offer essential psychosocial support services to men, women and children and their loved ones battling cancer.” Ms. Imus is also co-founder and co-director of the Imus Cattle Ranch for Kids with Cancer, and the best-selling author of the Green This! series of “lifestyle detoxification” books.
“We are pleased to further strengthen our board with the addition of Deirdre Imus,” said Ruth Dugan, board president of Gilda’s Club. “This appointment represents the natural progression of a wonderful relationship with a true advocate for people who may be affected by environmental toxins – including people with cancer.”
Named for the late comedian Gilda Rader of Saturday Night Live, the clubhouse offers lectures, workshops, social events and support groups. More information about Gilda’s Club NNJ is available at www.gildasclubnnj.org or by calling (201) 457-1670.
